FIFA bans Diego Maradona for Two Months
Latest news about Diego Maradona is that he has been banned for the next two months together with a hefty fine of more than $24,000. This was decided on Sunday after one more outburst from the Argentina coach, as his foul language outburst that took place in October during the decisive World Cup qualifier in Uruguay 1-0 when they secured their spot for the South Africa games.
The outburst happened when he was interviewed on the touchline and then again inside the post-match media conference, which was broadcast live on several television networks. Maradona statement to the media was to “suck it and keep on sucking.” Years back Maradona‘s problems started with drug addiction, alcohol problems and obesity and then progressed when he was thrown out of the 1994 World Cup for a doping offence.
Maradona stood in person before the disciplinary tribunal behind closed doors at FIFA headquarters and apologised to the FIFA governing body about his behaviour when he was faced with the potential ban from some of his team’s matches at next year’s World Cup. The 49 year old coach did show genuine remorse about the incident, he wore dark glasses and a track suit, walking away from the reporters whilst refusing to comment.
On the day, there was a small crowd holding up Argentina flags and a similar number of journalists gathered outside the gates of FIFA headquarters in the Zurich.
FIFA commented; “The FIFA disciplinary committee…decided today to impose a two-month ban on taking part in any football related activity and a 25,000 CHF ($24,630) fine on the head coach of Argentina Diego Maradona. The committee took into consideration the apologies and the sincere remorse shown by Maradona in its decision, which was communicated to him at the end of the meeting. “The committee stressed that any breach of this decision or any repetition of a similar incident would mean that stronger sanctions would have to be imposed in the future.”
The ban is to start off immediately until January 15 which means that the coach will not have to miss any competitive internationals. He will however miss out on the friendly game against Czech Republic.
