European Qualifying Playoffs 18th November

4

Ukraine – Greece, Donetsk 18th November

We hope for a more open game with more goals then the goalless stalemate in Athens on Saturday. This is the most open and most evenly balanced of all the European playoff matches and anything apart from a tight fixture would be a surprise. Greece will put their hope to top striker Theofanis Gekas but the Ukraine team is just as dangerous forward when the chances comes, with Andrei Shevchenko being the top name to score.

We believe the home team will qualify with the backing of the home crowd and we found some good odds for this event at Unibet. A 1-0 result bet gives 5.50 and Ukraine to win this match gives you 1.75.

Bosnia-Herzegovina – Portugal, Zenica 18th November

This is for us the big game of the evening. Portugal dominated the first leg but only scored once, and didn’t always look to secure in the defense, will it be enough away to a hungry Bosnian team? The Portuguese needs to find that creativity in their attack when Ronaldo is not available. Bosnia is missing a few player themselves from yellow cards in the previous game and they need to convert their chances to have any chance to qualify.

We put our money on Portugal to qualify with the smallest margin and bet for a draw in Zenica tomorrow. 3.40 is the current odds offered at Ladbrokes for a draw, or why not special but such as “Bosnia to score first and Portugal to score last” to 4 times the money.

France – Ireland, Saint-Denis 18th November

A very tough task is awaiting for Ireland and there is not many of us that believes they can turn this around against a strong french team. They need to play better throughout the whole game and have some luck to be able to clear this. The french will not take anything for granted though and coach Domenech comments:

“Our strong point is being able to score goals. We mustn’t get it into our heads that they are going to come here and cause us problems. We have to wrap up this match.” says the french manager.

Slovenia – Russia, Maribor 18th November

After the late goal from Slovenia in the first leg, this has turned into an exciting fixture. Away goals can prove to be valuable in these kind of playoffs and Slovenia has a great chance to make a success story in front of the home fans. Russia feel they still have control and coach Guus Hiddink remains optimistic.

“We did not lose the first match we won it! And there’s no room for panic. I know that a very tough battle is waiting for us in Slovenia but we gave another proof that we can upset any opposing team…” comments Hiddink.

We believe Hiddink will take out all the best of his players tomorrow and qualify Russia for next summers World Cup 2010 tournament. An away win for Russia gives great 2.30 (13/10) at Ladbrokes. We would also recommend Under 2.5 goals, at Expekt Sportsbook this gives you 1.65 at the moment.

Some tantalising matches tonight, it’s just a shame some of the gloss is taken off by the EU’s refusal to grant its citizens an open gambling market. French, Portuguese and Greek fans have only state run monopoly bookmakers to be through, which limit their options on the betting available, and offer them much poorer value odds than the private market. See this comparison http://tiny.cc/Copb6 from last week’s fixture between Ireland and France – it’s completely unfair on gamblers!
