Dunga done as Brazil’s manager
Brazil’s national soccer team manager Dunga confirmed on July 3rd that he is resigning from the job after bowing out to Holland 2-1 in the World Cup quarterfinals. It was Brazil’s first loss in the tournament, but they never really looked too assured of themselves during the event despite beating North Korea 2-1, the Ivory Coast 3-1, drawing 0-0 with Portugal and then beating Chile 3-0 in the playoff round.
Brazil won Group G as most fans predicted, but there seemed to be something lacking in their performances. Dunga had better luck in the 2007 Copa America and the 2009 Confederations Cup as Brazil won both of those tournaments. Dunga took over the manager’s role in 2006 and has always stated that he took the job for four years only and that his time is now up.
He said it’s obviously more disappointing to go out with a loss, especially in the World Cup as nobody prepares to get beaten. He said the loss to Holland came about as the team lost its rhythm against them in the second half and the red card to Felipe Melo put them further in the hole. However, he said the responsibility ultimately falls to him.
For his part, Melo has apologized to Brazilian fans for being sent off. He was also credited with an own goal for heading in Holland’s first of the game, but it was later credited to Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder.
As with every World Cup though, Brazil is usually regarded as the favorite to win the trophy as they’ve done it five times before. However, this is often an unrealistic and unfair observation as the team is being expected to live up to past glories. The fact is, not all Brazilian teams are as strong as some of them were in the past and getting knocked out of the World Cup to the hottest team in the tournament isn’t really much of a surprise to many soccer experts.
Brazil’s lack of discipline was also a factor in the tournament as Kaka was also ejected from a game, against the Ivory Coast. The players didn’t appear to know how to react when trailing and many fans blame Dunga for the team’s lack of attacking play.
It’ll be interesting to see the style of play the team takes on next with a new manager.
