Algeria Include Banned Players in their Preliminary Squad
The latest World Cup country to put forward its preliminary 30 man squad is Algeria, who join England, the USA and Slovenia in Group C. Algeria are planning to add another five players to the preliminary squad on the 11th May, just ahead of the team starting their World Cup training camp in Switzerland. The squad will eventually be whittled down to the 23 man line up who will play in South Africa.
Coach Rabah Saadane has stated that his intention is to keep the backbone of the Algeria team that made the semi-finals of the African Nations Cup in Angola earlier in the year. The difficulty here as that a couple of players picked up bans in that tournament, and will therefore have to miss 2010 World Cup games.
Defender Nadir Belhadj, who plays club football in the English Premiership with Portsmouth, was selected, though he will have to miss the first game against Slovenia. First choice goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi will have to miss both the Slovenia game and the second game against England, both because of bans given in the African Nations tournament.
With Algeria not highly fancied to make it through the group stage, it may have a significant impact that their best goalkeeper will miss two out of three of the games, including the one against the group favourites England.
Only four of the players in the preliminary 30 play in the Algerian domestic league, with the rest playing their club football elsewhere around the world. Three of the four are goal keepers, so it is likely that in Chaouchi’s absence a keeper with little international experience will have to be used against Slovenia and England.
After their Swiss training camp, Algeria have lined up two pre World Cup friendlies, both against unqualified teams. They will take on the Republic of Ireland, who narrowly missed qualification in a controversial play off against France, on May the 28th in Dublin. They then play the following week in Germany against the United Arab Emirates, just before heading to South Africa to start the competition.
