Austria vs Slovenia Preview

Austria meets Slovenia in a relegation-round game at the Orange Arena in Bratislava on May 7th in the IIHF World Hockey Championships. Slovenia sits tied for first place with Belarus in the relegation group (Group G) with three points while Austria shares the basement with Latvia with no points. Belarus is in first because of superior goal difference while Austria is in last because of goald difference.

This is the second relegation-round game for each team. Slovenia beat Latvia 5-2 in their first game. They held a 3-0 lead after the second period and the teams each scored twice in the third. Tomaz Razingar and Rok Ticar had two goals each for Slovenia while Rok Pajic added a single. Robert Kristan made 29 saves for the win as Latvia outshot Slovenia 31-23.

Austria was humbled 7-2 by Belarus in their first relegation game. They were trailing 5-0 after the second period and each team scored two in the final frame. Oliver Setzinger and Michael Schiechl scored for the Austrians.

Austria just doesn’t seem to have what it takes to compete this time around, but it’s not for a lack of effort. Slovenia should be too strong for the Austrians in all areas of the ice and they should win this game by three goals.

Ladbrokes has the odds of a Slovenia win at 17/20 and an Austrian win at 9/4. The odds of a tie after 60 minutes are 10/3. Bet365 has the odds of a Slovenia win by three goals at 9/2.
